Learning subjects outside the class rooms

Unlike other schools, Holy Innocents’ High School is proud to present their students a series of activities and useful information monthly. April in HIHS(Holy Innocents’ High School) will be a fun-filled and educational month.

April is the month of aesthetics organized by the Art, Design & Technology and Food & Nutrition department

HIHS had prepared workshops such as Batik Workshop, Product workshop and food art workshop.

“Though the Batik workshop is boring, however, when I saw the masterpiece, I felt that all the efforts had paid off.” mentioned Tang Tang.

HIHS had put up art pieces which were done by their own students and staffs.

The school has also simulated art works of famous artists like Vincent Van Gogh’s, Christo Javacheff’s art works. A few of Christo Javacheff’s art works like the Wrapped Plants, The Umbrellas, have been simulated by HIHS and have been exhibited out.

An example will be, ‘The Umbrellas’ which are free-standing dynamic modules reflected the availability of land in each country etc.

However, in HIHS, the umbrellas are arranged in tight proximity to each other to illustrate the close knitted community of teachers in the school who are concerted in creating better lives for HIHS students.

Besides letting students know more about those art works, HIHS have also prepared performances during recess by their very own performing arts group like Drama, Band etc. It is part of the aesthetic month too.

A student of Secondary 2 Humility, Soon Heng responded to us that: “The aesthetic month’s workshop and exhibition are rather interesting, the only disappointment was the busking.”

Even in the toilet, students of HIHS can find posters of information about the aesthetic month.

Soon Heng also added that he will be looking forward to the following months to learn more about the other subjects.

There are still some activities in line with the month such as the exhibition, concerts, etc. Thus hurry and participate in the activities.

Cafe@HIHS, thumbs up or down?

Cafe@HIHS aint like other cafes. They do not sell coffee , nor cakes , nor food there .

Cafe@HI is a concert performed by the Mondern Dance Club , Drama Club , Choir and more performing arts group.

This concert is organised by the asthetics department which is inclusive of the Arts, Design&Technology and Food&Nutrition.

On 16 April 2010, this concert has broke the records of the school as it had its tickets all sold out.

Once you step into the hall , you get to see rows of hundreds of chairs arranged neatly . And on the chairs , were menus . Not menus for food , but the menus for the upcoming performances !

What is so special about the concert ? Why not using cute little puppets were used as the mc ? And yes , HIHS used this idea , and it brought laughter to everyone .

" It was a funfilled concert , I really love it . I didn't regret paying 10 dollars on the ticket as the money would be donated to the school pocket money funds . " Tianyu , one of the students in HIHS , commented .

The school pocket money fund is raised for the needy students in school. HIHS will provide them with pocket money monthly.

Though many students feel that this concert was a success, there are a certain amount of people feeling that this concert wasnt what they expected .

Vanessa, one of the student who went for the concert with her friends mentioned that she felt this concert was really boring and there were no suprises for her.

As the tickets are available for all, some parents turned up. Mr John Lee feels that as long as the students had put in their 100% effort , it was the best performance.

Theresa , one of the Choir members who performed on stage , exclaimed that she really love to show off what she had learnt all this while in her CCA to her friends and family .

Although the concert ended , Cafe@HIHS might be back with popular demand . Stay tune ~

Living In The World Of Art

( The First Picture is about the information on the exhibition. The second picture is one of the art piece on the wall while the last picture is on the workpiece for D&T.)

Entree Arts exhibition beginning on 12 April 2010 in Holy Innocents' High School symbolizes the start of the aesthetics month. The exhibition is being held at The Space and is organised by the Aesthetics Department.

The Aesthetics Department includes Art, Design & Technology and Food & Nutrition.

In this exhibition, they had shown drawings, pictures of food, student's art piece, but all this can't hold a candle compared to the video clip they have shown.

The clip had showed students how advanced technology has became as they had described the changes from which a simple drawing in the ancient times became paintings which is an amazing experience.

" We would like to use this exhibition to prove to students that they could learn the subjects in the fun and interactive way. " mentioned Mrs Zailee, one of the art teacher in HIHS.

The D&T HOD, Mr Ken Teo exclaimed that they hope this exhibition can arouse the interest of the students.

Linda Tan, one of the students we had interviewed told us that she had really liked this exhibition as it had made her understand more on the aesthetic subjects.

The exhibition will end on 16 April 2010, therefore, grab your chance now and take a look at the exhibition of the art pieces.

Jumping With The 2's

The first picture shows one of the student challenging the high elements while the second picture shows the class photo of 2 humility after the camp. ( With the Camp cheer they did during the camp attached.)

Can you imagine jumping off an 8 metre height to catch a rod ?

In the annual Secondary 2 camp held in February, a student from class 2 humility, which prefers to be known as Jane, participated in the High Elements although she gave up in the end.

In the interview, Jane mentioned that she was really thankful for her teachers, friends and PSLs(Peer Support Leaders) for supporting her all the way.

Peer Support leaders are a group of students who had made this camp possible, guide the students through out the camp and give the peers the moral support when they meet difficulties during the camp.

Other than this, she added that although she had not completed this challenge, she did the ziplines.

Xiaoling, Jane's good friend exclaimed that she was shocked when Jane volunteered to challenge the zipline and to overcome her fears.

It was told by another good friend of Jane, YongEn, that Jane was so afraid of the heights and cried when it was her turn for the high elements.

In this 3 day 2 night camp, there were high elements, sea activities, station games, etc.

" There were not enough time for me to complete the zipline- it was a rare opportunity but i missed it. " Zhuzhu, a sophomore comment.

After the whole game, friends are more bonded together , teachers are closer with their students and teenagers could face their fears and overcome them.

"2 humility '10 is more active this year compared to last." said Gabriel , the PSL of 2 humility.
